High House is a Grade 1 listed Country House built in the mid 18th Century.
It is now the home and workplace of two artists.
The house occupies a secluded rural location, surrounded by 130 acres of parkland, 40 acres of woodland, an orchard and walled garden.
In 2018 we opened the Apple Café in the walled garden. Good Coffee!
The nearest village shop and pub are two miles away (we have 2 bikes for you to use but you may want to bring your own). The nearest train station is King Lynn, 1 hour 40 minutes from London.
The recently completed renovation of the House and surrounding buildings has provided the studio space and accommodation to support visiting artists. The desire is to share this wonderful place.
This is however delivered as an exchange, there are many parts to the day-to-day running of the estate and we would welcome your assistance in the garden, orchard, parkland and woodland. All of which require management to keep them healthy and productive.
We expect up to 3 hours work per weekday morning (8.30-11.30). Weeding, thinning, clearing, burning, chopping, chipping, picking, digging, mulching and more weeding. This physical involvement with the land is a positive part of the experience of staying here.
The work can be tailored to suit an individuals abilities, we can discuss this during the application process. Predominantly it will be about an extra pair of hands and should not distract us from the Focus of the residency, it has been set up to provide an environment in which an artist can develop their practice, with large studios (each 110m3), very few distractions, and as of 2020 access to a library.
